For safe movement on a via ferrata, appropriate equipment that meets internationally recognized standards is mandatory.
For safe movement on a via ferrata, appropriate equipment that meets internationally recognized standards is mandatory. Beginners can also use this equipment, provided they are physically and mentally prepared. They should start with the easiest climbs and, based on their experience and skill, carefully choose via ferratas according to their difficulty.
MANDATORY EQUIPMENT
Currently, there are various via ferrata sets available on the market from different manufacturers. Previously, V sets were used, which had a V-shaped configuration, but today, the use of Y sets (sets shaped like the letter Y) has been approved by UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation). The most crucial part of the Y set is the energy absorber, which consists of a block containing a specially folded strip that deploys in case of a fall. This reduces the impact force and absorbs the impact if it occurs. The folded strip is protected inside a bag with a zipper to prevent it from scratching against the rock.
A standard climbing helmet should be used for a via ferrata (it is not allowed to use helmets intended for construction work, cycling, motorcycling, or similar purposes that are not designed for climbing). The helmet serves two purposes. First, it protects the head from direct impact with the rock in case of slipping and falling. Second, it shields the head from rockfall or falling stones from above. This can happen due to natural causes or because of another climber above you accidentally dislodging rocks.
A standard climbing harness is typically used for a via ferrata (there are also harnesses specifically designed for via ferratas). It is essential that the waist belt, when adjusted, is above the hips and tight enough so that the harness cannot be pulled down over the hips. The leg loops should also be adjusted sufficiently (but not overly tight) around the thighs to prevent them from sliding.
